Week 2 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling week 2
My second week working with cycling was very exciting! I was given the duty to do a bicycle safety presentation at the Campbellsville Wal-Mart. While I was there at Wal-Mart, there was a table set up with helmets, elbow pads, brochures for children, and a free raffle. I brought a bike and my racing helmet for viewing purposes. Some of the demonstrations that I did included proper helmet fitting and pointing out certain features of the bike that a child and parent should be cautious about. It was a very rewarding experience to share my cycling knowledge with kids and parents.
But wait, there is MORE! I had to go to Mackville for a second bicycle safety presentation. This time it was in front of about 140 5th grade students from three different schools in the area. I did the presentation with Lindsey Wilson Alumni and former USA Cycling Collegiate Dual Slalom National Champion, Cody Stagner. It was a very great and rewarding experience because it helped me get over some of my personal fears of rejection while being in front of a group of people. There were times when some of the children would get out of hand, so I had to use my ‘big boy voice’ and get their attention, which also presents a fear of mine – being known as the ‘bad/mean person’. However, all of the kids seemed to enjoy the presentation that included safety tips, proper helmet fitting, a question and answer segment, and a bicycle stunt demonstration.
Besides doing the bicycle safety presentations, I have continued working on one of my projects which is the compilation of points for every student-athlete that has worn and raced in a Lindsey Wilson jersey. I have developed a good relationship with Ruth over at Plant because I had to get a Lindsey Wilson vehicle on each of the days that I had to do presentations. I have also been learning about recruiting and how to gain interest of potential students, along with how to correspond to them in terms of talking about scholarship money, admissions, among other things. I have been developing a professional relationship with some prospective student-athletes from across the world. Some of them are from France, Australia, South Africa, and all across the United States. I’ve been also gathering some additional information regarding my special project – the videos. So, week 2 was definitely a success!

---------------------------
HWC week 2
Week two was the final week for preparations for the Flab2Fab fitness challenge. I had to finalize the participant parameters, schedules, sign-up sheets, and answer numerous questions regarding the program. One of the issues that I have run into and has constantly bothered me is that due to time constraints (of my own – doing two internships) is the fact that we can only accept 16 people into the program. The number of people that have signed up was in the 30s. I really wish I could help everyone that has signed up, but I have to get over it and strive to make the program as successful as I possibly can.
I also started dealing with some of the major programming aspects of the Couch-2-5K training program and dealing with programming the 5K event, too. Which has led to more time constraint issues since the Flab2Fab program will end up taking near 20 hours in itself, but I will work over those 20 hours if necessary to make sure that the programs is properly planned and successful.
In terms of dealing with the programming of the Flab2Fab challenge, one of the constraints that I came up with included how to choose the eight teams of two – sixteen people total. I chatted with Joel about it several times and the conclusion that was made was that the six teams that have the highest percentage of weight lost would be selected. Those six teams would then vote on a seventh team to be chosen. O’Shaughnessy, Joel, and myself would pick the final team. From there, those eight teams will have seven more weeks under my jurisdiction until the final weight-in on July 26, 2011.
It has been a great week and I am ready for week three and the challenges it will bring!

Week 2-Zach Prichard-Graceland Baptist Church

Well week 2 got started off on the wrong foot from the beginning. We had terrible rain weekend the week before, so getting the fields ready Monday morning was going to be a hand full. I got in on Monday around 9 and me and Karen, (the Recreation Director) got started on getting the water off the field, and scratching up the dirt so that it could have some time to dry. Lucky for us it was actually a really nice day, so the fields had a lot of time to dry before the games at 6 that night. Karen has been doing this job for 35 years, so by Karen giving me most of the responsibility to get the fields dry was not a big deal to me. On the major/minor league field, the water was mainly on home plate, the mound, and 3rd base area. There was standing water, but with the kind of dirt they have on the field it really soaks it up really well and gets it dry pretty fast. By 4 we had all the fields hand raked and ready to be dragged by the mule. So I got the mule and nail drug the fields, and followed it by dragging them with a mesh drag. Me and Karen had the fields in tip top shape, and we were very happy with the way they looked. After lining the fields for game time, and getting the pitching machine out to the softball field for the 6-8 yr old girls game, me and Karen went into the concession stand to make sure the youth kids were getting everything set up for the games that night. At 5:30 we walked out of the concession stand and couldn't believe what we saw. It looked like we were in another town, I couldn't believe how it could go from being completely sunny, and a beautiful day to so many clouds and it looking like it was going to thunderstorm. We went over to the softball field to get them started, just hoping it was clouds and not rain, at 6 we started seeing the lighting show. The other team that is not affiliated with Graceland Baptist decided they were just going to leave, which they kind of left too quickly, but it turned out they left right on time. We took the mule over to the major league game and told the coaches to get the kids in their cars with their parents. I drove the mule up to the church to drop off one of the workers and when I came back down to the fields, Karen yelled at me to go get the pitching machine off the softball field before it started pouring. Just as I leave the field with the pitching machine I got drove the mule into the bus barn (barn where they keep the mule and lawn mowers), it started raining so bad that I thought the building I was in was going to come down. I started looking around at all the tools and thinking to myself, this reminds me of the movie twister where they are hiding out in an underground garage and a character gets his head sliced open by a table saw. Never the less I was scared out of my mind. There were trash cans getting knocked over, port-o-potties being knocked over, I just didn't know how I was going to get out of there. Luckily, the rain slowed down just enough for me to run to my car and get out of there. We decided to leave the bases on the field and just deal with it tomorrow. Well, Tuesday roles around and again, another beautiful day, still, you could of bet me 1,000 dollars that we were going to have games that day, and I would of happily taken that bet. But, I would have been wrong. I was so dumbfounded by the way that dirt soaks up the water, and sure enough, we had the fields ready by game time. It was a little muddy for my liking, but it was still playable. The games ran smoothly, and we got the field cleaned up afterward and went home for the night. Wednesday night we had even more rain, and more rain Thursday morning, this was a day we were not going to play. We made the call around 3:45 that the games were going to be canceled, so me and Karen started calling all the people that needed to know. We also put a message up on the answering machine that parents can call to find out if there will be games or not. So lucky for me, I got off a little early that day. Friday is Karen's day off, and since there were not going to be any games that week because of Memorial Day weekend, I didn't have to work on the fields. I got started early on the equipment room that needed some serious cleaning out and re-arranging. Lucky for me, I had a pretty good sized table to use that I could set stuff on so I could re-arrange the shelves. I looked at all the baseball equipment, and started setting aside things that we could still use, and things that just needed to be taken to the dump. I also set aside stuff that we could take to Goodwill. I got the first 2 racks done, and that was all that was able to get taken care of that day. Because I knew some teams were going to make up one of their games on Monday on their own, I decided to go ahead and drag the fields myself so that at least the fields would be ready for them on Monday. That was the end of my week since there were no games on Saturday, and Monday was Memorial Day. See ya next time!

Week 1- Daron Morris: The Pines at Lindsey Wilson

At the end of week one I am even more excited about my intership at The Pines. I had an idea of what to expect, but not in great detail. I was familiar with alot of the things on my job list. At the beginning of the week, I worked the opening shift the first four days. During the opening shift I arrive at the golf course at 6:45a.m. I quickley begin to clean and line up golf carts outside the proshop. After the carts are ready, i make sure the trash is taken out, clean bathrooms, stock drinks and snacks, then i finish with vaccuming the proshop. Once i have finished preparing the proshop for the day, I start on the bank deposit from the previous day. I will also document the amounts of "rounds of golf played", as well as "members and guest played". After I finish all the paper work i return to the proshop to record all the players who play. Also I work the cash register and make sure everything is ran smoothly. Last but not least I make sure that every costumer is happy and also make sure they enjoy their golfing experience at The Pines.

Burlington Bees

Well since the double header ran smoothly yesterday I thought coming in to work today at 10:00am was going to be a smooth and easy day. Boy was I wrong. I am beginning to think my days are getting worse and worse as the days go by. Do not get me wrong, I love my job; it is just the way things are beginning to be run. T.J., the guy that gets paid for this job, is getting lazier and lazier as the days go on. It is getting to the point where I run this place, even during the Bees games. Today I came into work and got straight started on my work. First thing I did was get everything together to fix the game mound and home plate area. Tony and I got started right away. We wanted today to run smooth so we worked together on getting everything perfect. Games mound and home plate area complete. Next was to fix the bullpen mounds. Tony was working with me this morning and we decided that we were going to make the bullpen mounds look just as good as the game mound. This morning was great because me and Tony finally clicked and found our routine working together. Once we got the mounds finished we went straight into our next task, edging the entire field. This includes the warning track and the infield skins. Of course after edging comes raking up the grass clippings. So to begin the morning T.J. told us a list of things that he wanted done today. The list was fairly long. We had to maintain the whole field. This includes mowing, edging, raking, sweeping the outfield, painting the foul lines over, dragging the warning track, cleaning up around the shop area, emptying the trash, to anything else that needs to be done. The thing about this is that T.J. gave us this list and then just leaves. He was gone for about two hours then comes back with Burger King and just eats in front of us, not offering us to go to lunch for anything. At this point it is already 1:00pm, usually lunch is at 11:30am or 12:00pm. So by this time I am getting frustrated and I can tell that Tony is getting frustrated as well. So we go on about our day like nothing is wrong. Like I said earlier me and Tony were working in sync with each other and our day was going smooth. Once we would finish a job we would walk back to the shop area and T.J. would be gone. He would stay gone for hours. Again, we still have not eaten lunch and T.J. is still gone. It is getting closer to 3:00pm and we only have two tasks left to complete for the day. We still have to drag the warning track and pick up grass clippings and paint the foul lines. So as time goes on I decide to take control and I tell Tony that we are cutting out and going to get lunch with or without permission from boss man. At 3:00pm we dip out and go get lunch. While at lunch Tony and I discuss what our day has consisted of and what we got to do to keep it going so smoothly. We got a plan together and headed back to work. Usually T.J. allows us an hour or so for lunch but today we were not on T.J.’s time we were on our own time. As long as we got our jobs done and done them correctly, we were satisfied. When we got back from lunch I finished dragging the warning track while Tony got the strings lined out for painting the fouls lines. Dragging was done and Tony had started on one line while I got started on the other. Tony and I were in such good sync today that it seemed like we would finish our jobs at the same time. Well now after a long day and super hard work, everything was finished. We sat back at the shop for a few and ran over our list for the day and made sure we covered everything and that it was done correctly and to the best of our abilities. Of course, everything was perfect. So as our day came to an end T.J. decides to show back up. He never said a word to us, no thank you good job or nothing. He grabbed the hose and started watering the infield, held up both hands indicating 10:00 bells. 10 bells means to be at work at 10:00 o’clock in the morning. Well I do not know what the tension was today between T.J. and us but whatever it was made Tony and I click and we still got everything done in time to get out of here before 5:00pm. Geez today was a tiring day plus the hours seemed mighty long but it was productive and well needed. Despite the fact Tony and I are the main ones that keep this park running, T.J. gets all the credit. Oh well, enough complaining again but I told you it was coming another time. I just had to get that off my chest. Monday down Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to go, off on Friday and the rest of the weekend. Goodnight world, another update tomorrow! Hopefully another positive one!

Well I glad to start out this journal by saying that today went just as smooth as yesterday. I showed up at work at 10 bells just as T.J. insisted. For some reason Tony and I are clicking together now and realizing that we should not complain about what T.J. tells us to do and just do it, and do it to the best of our ability. I mean for the main part we are the ones maintaining the field and we are getting positive feedback. T.J. just gets all the credit. In the long run though, we all know who really did all the hard work. Anyways, today went good. We came in at 10 bells and got right to work. We knew what needed to be done today in order to get ready for the game and that is exactly what we did. As always first thing first I start out by mowing the infield and making sure the grass and skin are in perfect shape for a game. Since we did all the hard and important work yesterday it made today run more smoothly and easier. After the grass was cut Tony already had the warning track drugged and it was time to start on something we rarely have time for, rolling the field. When we rolled the field it means we actually get a roller out and draw the lines in the field to make it look pretty. So we start rolling the field around 11:00am. We figured we could have the field rolled by lunch time and after lunch we could finish the main work that needed to be completed by batting practice. The field was rolled and everything looked to be going in the right direction. By time the field was rolled it was 12:30 time for lunch. T.J. gave us the go ahead for a 30 minute lunch. Well I’m going to take this time to complain for Tony. Tony is just a volunteer for the organization. He was an intern here last year and decided he wanted more experience so decided to donate his time again this summer. To keep in mind Tony lives 15 minutes away from the stadium. For a 30 minute lunch that is not enough time for him to eat and get back. So he tells me he is going to take 45 minutes instead. I’m and not one bit mad at him for this. So I still take my 30 minutes and get back to work. Once I show us T.J. is not to be found, so I start on the all the work by myself. I try to do the things that I know need to be done for batting practice. I start pulling all the screens and batting cages out to the field and lining them up in order to be used. I take it upon myself and go in the club house and talk with the manager of the team and find out what kind of early work they are going to be doing, so I know what equipment to set out. Early work today is nothing special just a little early hitting and some PFP’s, pitcher’s fielding practice. So I got things set up for that and by that time Tony and T.J. was both back. Early work started and then straight into batting practice the team went. Usually during batting practice we get an hour break, but not today. Today it seemed like T.J. was in his mood again and started us a list of stuff to do during this time instead. So the list began with taking care of the nursery and cleaning behind the outfield wall. So I took that job while Tony took the job of cleaning up the shop area. I began the nursery with a quick push mow and little water. Remember the nursery is our extra sod that we have planted behind the outfield wall for our emergency repairs that we may have occurred on the playing field. After that was completed and the trash was picked up Tony was done cleaning and our hour break was already up. Now it was time to take everything down from batting practice and set up for the game. The usual duties for game prep took place. I chalked the lines, painted the plate and rubber, and helped water the field. Game set up complete, time to wash the bases and take a break for a change. At least that is what I thought, but no, T.J. made some new rules up and stated that all post game equipment had to be set up before we took our break. So we got everything set for post game which includes, mound clay made, rakes and equipment put in the gator, and 6th innings base change bases painted. That was complete and time for BREAK! After we ate we chilled for a bit and then it was time for 6th inning base change. This is something new we started to promote 6 month clean-up for a local dentist. Base changing was done, cleaned previous bases and relaxed until after the game. Post game routines went as usual. I was in charge of fixing home plate area and Tony took the mound. We got everything done in a decent amount of time and took care of covering the mound, plate, and bullpens before T.J. could finish dragging the skin. Took down the flag, killed the scoreboard, and cleaned the bases. Now it was time to wait on T.J. He was in one of those moods still so he gave us the thumbs up and we took off. We knew what time we have to be in, in the morning so off to the house we go. Goodnight, after another long and positive for ME on the diamond.

So another day passed and another day began. Came in to work at the usual 10 bells this morning and got started right away. The catch about today is that Tony was not available to work today because his grandfather passed away last week and the funeral was toady. Not mad at all. I knew that without Tony here today that T.J. had to pitch in and help out a little bit or things would not get done in time for the game tonight. First thing first you would think would be to mow the infield, but no, once again T.J. had a “special job” for me to do. We have this “pit” in the shop area that we wash everything into once we clean the equipment. Well as you can probably guess, it gets clogged up often and somebody has to be the once to clean that out. Well that person today was me! To complete this task you have take a shovel and scoop up the entire nasty gunk out of the hole and place it into the gator to be taken back to the dump pile. This was really nasty by the way. I suffered through it and got it finished. T.J. had me start on fixing the bullpen mounds while he took the time to help out and mow the infield grass and get it fixed for game play. It took me a total of two hours to fix the bullpen mounds alone. Once these were fixed it was already 12:30pm and time for me to take a lunch. Well once again I’m going to be out here until 11:00pm again I only get a 30 minute break. Once my lunch was over it was time to get back to work. I came back and started dragging. Once the warning track was drugged and everything else looked decent enough for game play, I was off to the club house again to figure out the early work schedule. This is something I am excited to do. During this time I get the opportunity to chat with the players and coaches a little bit. I can not complain too much because I have made quite a few friends throughout the team and staff doing this internship. I am sure once I leave here I will still have plenty of connections to vacate in the near future, and maybe even a few job opportunities. I found out that early work today was just base running and early hitting drills. This made my job a lot easier. All I had to do was set up for batting practice and I was done. So I figured T.J. would have me doing some odd job during this hour and 45 minute break that I had but his wife came to visit so he actually gave me the break of 45 minutes. I came back with an hour left of batting practice just incase they got done early and we could begin to set up for the game. Well Once I got back T.J. had a surprise for me, we had some help show up. This kid from the half-way house had some community service hours he had to complete, so we called him in. Lucky we did because I doubt T.J. and I could have complete pre game set up alone. So I got the privilege of showing this guy the steps to setting up for a game. He was not much help but it was better than nothing. I still chalked the lines, plated home plate and rubber, put in bases and help water the field. This guy was just helpful for carrying the equipment for me. He was eager to learn though, because he asked a lot of questions. I actually felt helpful because I could answer them all. Everything was set up and it was time to set up everything for the 6th inning base change and for post game routines. Well I gave this new guy that job. I told him everything to do and he did it with no question. That took a real chip off my shoulder and I got some relaxing time. Game time was over, with another win and time for another post game clean-up. Half-way house people are supposed to be back before 11:00pm so I had to get things done in a jiffy if I wanted the help. So I got the helper to help me with the heavy things first. We covered the bullpens, and then I got him to take down the flag, kill the scoreboard, and clean the bases while I fixed the mound and the home plate area. 11:00pm came and our help left but their was still work to do. While T.J. finished with the skin repairs, I cleaned all the equipment and tried to get a head start on tomorrow. We finished up with watering the field. During this task T.J. opened up to me and we talked about the last few days. He admitted to being what he called a “dick”. He said that he was just trying to make us step up our motivation to wanting to take over his field. In a way I understand this and I appreciate it but when he is complaining that we do not get task done in time and he is just sitting on his but, that does not help the cause. Anyways, watering was done, we got an in dept talk out of the way and was ready for bed and for another long day tomorrow. Goodnight!!!

Well we added another loss to the L column last night but that does not change the way things run around my job. I was back in again at 10 bells this morning to do it all over again. I was faced with some bad news first thing this morning; one of my buddies, A.J. Griffin, from the pitching staff got called up from Single-A Burlington to the Double-A Stockton team. This is bad news and good news at the same time because A.J. was one of my good buddies that I had gotten to know and now he is leaving but it is good news because he is stepping up the ladder to bigger and better things. I wish him the best of luck. Anyway, after hit with the bad news it was still back to work. At least today I got Tony back to help me. Today we tried something a little different. We continued to work together on the rebuilding the bullpen mounds but we split up and I did one side while he did the other and it made things run a little quicker. We got both bullpen mounds fixed in less the 45 minutes. I mean we got them done and they were fixed to perfection. After the mounds were fixed Tony started on the warning track and I started on the infield. Infield, check. Warning track, check. On to the next task which was pulling weeds out of the warning track. Something that is usually done on an off day, but T.J. figured it needed to be done for today’s game because it was community basket day, one of the busiest days of the year. Once the weeds were pulled it was on to lunch, my favorite part. Well it use to be when I got an hour or so for lunch where I could actually relax for a few. But now since lunch is only 30 minutes, I got enough time to get something quick to eat, eat, and then right back to work. We already knew what in store ahead of us for today’s early work, butting drills and a round of infield. So that means we can set most of the stuff up for batting practice and chill out for a few. Well we got about a 30 minute break between early work and batting practice. We set everything up for batting practice and got the equipment ready to get pre game going. Batting practice was over; we took down all the nets and screens and began on our pre game routine. I chalked the lines while Tony strung out the bases and fix the mound for pre game. Everything ran pretty smoothly through pre game today and we had extra time when we were finished to get a head start on cleaning the bases, getting things set up for the 6th inning skit, and getting things ready for post game set up. Game over, another win for the home team. With the team actually winning, it makes the job that much more fun. When you’re working for a winning team, not to mention the best team in the league, your co-workers are always in a better mood. Especially the general manager, if the team is winning he can not complain, too much! Post game clean up went just as well as any other night. We took everything slow and made sure we did it correctly. We covered up the mound and plate area and called it a night. T.J. is giving us Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off back to work on Monday for a Babe Ruth Little League game. Which is not too bad because we do not have to report in until 3:00pm to get the field ready by 5:30pm for a double header. Well another long week down and another ¾ of a season to go. Now it is time for a few days off before hitting it big next week. Goodnight!

Cody Wales- Introduction

My name is Cody Wales and i am completing my internship with the Burlington Bees in Burlington, Iowa. I am completing my internship in Sports Turf Management. During my time in Burlington i am going to be helping out with the Head Groundskeeper, T.J. Brewer. In the process of completing this internship i am responsible for maintaining the field at Community Field. This includes: mowing the infield and outfield, edging the grass, painting foul lines, pre game and post game set up, and anything else that needs to be done to get the field in proper shape for game days. I have already completed 7 weeks of my internship and am just now beginning to work on my special project which is an irrigation audit. An irrigation audit is going to consist of gather information to report how much water the organization uses throughout one full season just on sprinklers and watering the field. I have enjoyed most of my time here and excited to see where the rest of the summer takes me.

Thanks,

Week 1-Zach Prichard-Graceland Baptist Church

Coming into the internship at Graceland Baptist Church, I knew that it would be something familiar in the sense that I knew how to take care of fields, and maintain them to their specific needs. But after working 12 hours the first day, I realized it was a lot more work than I expected. I started off Monday at 9 am and proceeded to get the fields ready for the games that night which started at 6 pm. Karen Croft who is my internship supervisor, has been doing this job for 35 years and is the only person at the church who maintains the fields and gets them playable. So with Karen’s help we raked and drug the fields so that by 4 o’clock we could chalk the fields and have them set up for game time. Karen not only maintains the fields, but she has to take care of the concessions as well. So with my help, we had to get the food ready and everything set up so that when the youth groups kids showed up to work the concessions that night, everything had already been taken care of. Games are played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A regular day for me when there are games to be played that night looks a little like this. At 9 am I arrive and go take a look at the fields and see if there is any standing water from the night before. I carefully extract the water off the field if needed and rake up any spots that are more wet than others. Since there is only one ATV vehicle on site, and we share that with the maintenance guys, I have to do my best until they can hand it over to me. If the fields are dry enough to drag, I will drag them with the Mule, and then let them dry while I head back inside to run some errands for Karen. I take the money from the concessions the night before, count it, fill out the proper forms, and take it to the payroll department. I then go and check the vending machines to see if they need restocking, along with the concessions to make sure they are well stocked for the night. At 2 o’clock I set out basketballs for the little children who attend day camp at the church so they can have something to play with on their break. Once I feel the fields are dry enough, I will drag them again, but this time with the mesh drag and get them ready to be lined with chalk. I take 2 coolers up to the cafeteria to fill them up with ice so the youth group kids can have ice in the concession stand. Depending on what age group plays that night, I set up the bases accordingly and chalk the fields accordingly. Some age levels don’t have the same chalk lines, and some don’t have the same distance on the base paths. I set up the pitcher machine for the 6-8 yr old girls, and make sure the adjustments are made to it so it pitches right every time (which never happens). Once the games start, it is my job, along with Karen’s, to walk around and chat with parents and coaches to find out if there is anything we can help them with, or if there are any concerns that need to be brought to our attention. If it’s a Tuesday night or Saturday afternoon, I will umpire the 9 and 10 year old boys. I like umpiring, but I have found that parents and coaches at the younger level are more ruthless and rude than they are at the high school or college level. And at the end of the night, I have to count the cash drawer and take it home to turn in the next day, then make sure the bases get put up and the fields are dragged, then I start my day all over again the following day. On days we don’t have games I am usually making phone calls to people who have a weight room membership here at Graceland. Mainly to update our records and find out who is actually using the weight room and who isn’t. Because Karen only made it a one time membership fee, they have records of people who signed up 9 years ago, and probably don’t ever use the facility any more. So after 350 phone calls, I then head to the equipment room and start working on organizing and cataloging it to find out what we have and don’t need anymore. This internship is a definite eye opener to what goes on inside an organization that works with recreation and the community. I can’t wait for each day to come, because I enjoy seeing the look on the kids face when they succeed and I love being there to cheer them up when they fail.

Week 1 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling
My first week working with LWC Cycling has been fun and challenging. I have been put outside of my comfort zone several times with some of my duties, but that allows personal growth. The first week I was given the duty to contact potential recruits via facebook, email, and if need be by telephone. I have been in touch with over 15 potential student-athletes so far.
Another one of my duties and projects is to clean and prepare one of the cycling facilities, a shed, which will be turned into a station for LWC cyclists to work on and clean their bikes. The building is behind the Career Services Center and is a little white shed. There was a tree that had branches that were overlapping the entrance, so I had to contact the workers at Plant Services and have them trim down the branches to allow for easier accessibility. The shed was filled with leaves, garbage, and random junk. This past week I spent time cleaning the facility to make it look decent so we could continue onto the next phase of work in the shed. One of the next steps is going to be move all tools and things necessary for a bike work-station from the Cycling Center under the Project Success Center to the shed and arrange things in a manner that will allow for as much space as possible, while proving storage for home race items such as timing equipment, cones, flags, etc.
The fall mountain bike schedule is now prepared and the LWC home race is going to be the season opener in September. This means that there is much preparation to be done to our racing facilities to make sure that things are in good order when riders come back to school for the fall semester. I have also done logistical work submitting vehicle request forms for the fall mountain bike season, too.
One of the big projects I am working on is a record keeping system to keep track of every conference point that every student-athlete has ever earned while being a part of Lindsey Wilson College Cycling. This will let past, present, and future athletes know that they do matter and their efforts help the team. One issue that has come about is that our cycling team has been around for many years and the conference only has a recorded points archive from fall 2005 to present. Coach Grigsby and I are still working on how to get around the small road block because we would really like to include everyone that we can in the LWC conference points archive.
The special project that I will do for cycling is to develop two separate videos. One of the videos will provide footage of the roads and mountain bike terrain that is around here to show potential recruits that we have great training ground here. The second video will include a facilities tour. It will showcase the Holloway Health & Wellness Center, the weight room, the group exercise room, the hot tub and pool, offices for cycling, the Athletic Training offices, and more. There will also be some shots of the beautiful areas on campus, including the new dorms. There will also be a video interview with Dean Schmidt, who is a huge supporter of the LWC Cycling program. The idea of the video project is to show people who may never get the chance to visit exactly what we have available here.
The first week with Cycling was a success, now moving forward.

Holloway Health & Wellness Center
I knew right from the get-go that my internship with the HWC was going to take off in a sprint. That is exactly what happened during the first week. I immediately knew that I was going to do for the internship since Joel and I talked about it what I would do. I would have three main projects: create a fitness incentive program, create a 5K training group, and create an actual 5K event.
I am creating an eight-week “Biggest Loser” type competition that is available for HWC members; the only catch is that only about 16 participants will be chosen. One of the first things that I had to do was come up with a name for the program. I came up with a couple different ideas, presented them to Joel, asked input of other HWC workers, and even asked some members, just to have feedback from all different sides. The name that stuck out the most and caught everyone’s eyes and ears the most was the “Flab2Fab Fitness Challenge”. Since the program starts May 31, 2011 all of the details need to be created and reviewed during the first week, and then finalized during the second week.
I created a flyer for the Flab2Fab Fitness Challenge and set the dates for the program, as well. It will be going from May 31, 2011 until July 26, 2011. I learned how to edit the Lindsey Wilson website, as well, and changed the Fitness/Wellness page and included the F2F challenge information and flyer on the website. During the first week I had to develop a fitness journal log that participants will use during the program. I also developed a sign-up sheet, an add-on to the personal training application that everyone who participates must fill out, parameters that contestants must agree with in order to participate, a list of informational seminars and team building exercises that will go on during the fitness challenge, and a program satisfaction evaluation survey.
Some of the challenges I faced during the first week included learning how to create a program that will be beneficial for participants but at the same time limit the number of participants that are allowed. During the first two days that we advertised the program and had a sign-up sheet available, we had 19 people put their name and information down. This means that there will have to be some sort of ‘challenge’ during the first night to find the 16 participants. In the program we are not looking for someone who has about five to ten pounds to lose and just needs help with it, although that is important, the program is intended for the people who have obesity issues and want to take a step in the right direction towards shedding the weight and learning how to make good, healthy life decisions.
The details of the 5K training program are still in the works, but it will be a six-week training program from June 11, 2011 until July 23, 2011. The actual 5K has been tentatively scheduled for July 23, 2011. The program will be intended for anyone in the community who wants to take a step towards completing a 5K or who wants to better their 5K time.
One of the things that makes me somewhat uncomfortable with my internship at the HWC is that for the programs I will have to contact numerous companies to ask for prize donations for participants. I will contact companies, but I might be nervous the first couple times I contact them, but I will get past it and get used to it, too.
Week two will provide new challenges and be equally as fun.

Daron Morris- Introduction

I am working at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson this summer for my internship. My starting date was May 16th and my ending date will be July 30th. I will be working on managing the golf course and doing my best to make The Pines a very successful business. I expect to learn and experience every part of managing a golf course. Shane Perkey - Introduction

I will be doing my internship at Tim Horton's Camp Kentahten from May 24th until September 2nd. It is located 15 minutes from campus and allows me 14 days off throughout the summer, enabling me to travel and run wrestling camps on occasion. I am nervous because I will be leading kids who are unrelated to wrestling, but am excited to have the opportunity to grow as a mentor. It will be a relief to only have one time demanding job as opposed to 2, and it will also be a relief because you don't need a facade with children.

Zach Prichard-Introduction

I will be working this summer as an intern to the recreation department at Graceland Baptist Church in New Albany, Indiana. The recreation department runs multiple leagues throughout the year, and during my internship I will be a part of the baseball and softball league, and setting up for the upcoming soccer league. My internship started Monday the 16th, and will continue through the end of July. I have already had first hand experience since starting my internship the struggle recreation programmers go through making sure everything is in place and ready to go by game time, so I'm very excited about learning more, and helping out where needed.

Matt Dooley-Introduction

I will be working with David Cressman at SWS Mountain Guides for my summer internship. SWS is the leading guide service on Mt. Shasta and also provides services on Mt. Witney, and guiding trips in Peru, Mexico and more. This past weekend was guide training. I was able to learn real world applications from customer service to sharpening my skills at short roping and guiding in whiteout conditions on Mt. Shasta.
