WEEK 7 - Edie Foley - MWR

July 20, 2011 – Wednesday

Today I started off with writing a prescription for my 2nd Stroller Rollers class because I had to leave after the 1st one for a doctors apt. Even if I am gone, they still love to come in and see what challenge I’ve set up for that day for them to do. I did my 1st class and 2nd class different because there weren’t many in for the 1st class. I always have more at the 9:15am class because it is a later start. When I got back from the doctors at 12, I had participants of my event with questions so I spent about an hour calling and talking to a lot of Navy chiefs wanting to bring their unit in for me to train along with military personnel. I’m starting to really like working with the military because they are so respectful of everything you do for them. I started on another prescription after this because I have a Circuit Training class I instruct 2-3. Sometimes I have feedback from my clients/participants of what they would like to focus on more specifically so I use this as a learning session to do research on how to work that muscle the best. I had a good turn out in this class and wore myself to death. Sometimes I bit off more than I can chew when it comes to fitness because I do each workout with them. I left the last 30 mins of my class to questions and clean up. Some question I am asked are health related, I love this because it gets me motivated to do more research on the fitness and heath side of recreation.

I came in at 9:30am instead of 12:30 because of the time I’m making up for going to the doctors yesterday. My boss wasn’t in this morning so I took the time to write up a prescription for the Teen INDOC (boot camp) I’ve started because I won’t be able to instruct them next Tuesday so their supervisor is going to use my prescription for them so they still get fitness in their day. Most of today is relaxing and writing prescriptions for next week. I also had to review things for my event that I am doing because I am going home for the weekend until Tuesday so when I get back I need to have everything ready to roll and set up on Thursday. I still have to get prizes that sponsors are paying for but my boss has the NAFF card to buy things with but is out of her office until next week sometime which is really making me nervous. Both my bosses won’t be back until next week so it’s put a lot of pressure on me to do everything alone without advice. Therefore, today I spent more time than I thought looking up prizes for my age groups for 1st and 2nd place which was much harder than I expected. It has to be fitness related, but I can’t go over $500 for each age group, gender, and place prize. Since I worked until 9pm, I took time to think of other events to host for base for at least each month. Some small some big but I like getting people involved and being involved myself. I also cleaned the building I’m in because 1st shift doesn’t do it so someone has to and I can’t stand looking at the mess. I always thought if you have two arms and two legs then there’s no reason not to do your job, but if I don’t do it no one will. This pretty much ended my day because cleaning everything in this building seems to take more than a day.

Today was a really short day for me because my boss is letting me go on a home visit for the weekend until Tuesday. The only thing I did this morning was get the prescriptions for the Stroller Rollers set up, and instruct the first class of Stroller Rollers. I was going to stay and instruct the 2nd class but the participants said for me to leave because they knew the prescription and would do it together. This was a blessing for me because 9 hours home is a long way to be driving so I was able to get a head start. Riley and other staff was around to help keep an eye on the class so I wasn’t worried about leaving them to the prescription itself. Since I have all my project plans set out and ready to go, I was able to leave without a lot of stress on my shoulders.

(HOME VISIT)

Week 9 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

7-19-11
My week begins with an exciting trip with 33 kids from all over the states on Mt. Shasta. I have a group of 8 girls who's ages are from 15-18. These girls are mostly from the south so altitude is going to be a problem. Today we are going to 50-50 at 9600 feet to set up base camp. Good news the marian has melted out enough so TIM and i will not have to dig the tents in. saves a lot of time and energy. Also, note to future self. this is a crazy trip, but make sure you check all tent bags to make sure they have fly, body and poles, don't go off of weight. We have one tent at base camp with no poles. We are lucky this is a big group and there are extra spots available in tents. I teach my very first ice axe/ crampon clinic today all by myself. covered the basics and went over everything pretty fast but i felt like everyone in the group understands and everyone can self arrest and self belay which is the biggest thing. Put the girls into bed at 7:30pm. Tim and i talk about my role for tomorrow and snow conditions.

7-20-11
summit day. Wake up at 2am. breakfast is ready for the girls at 2:45am. I have to put all the girls crampons and harnesses on. Sweet southern bells are very needy this morning. Tim has me stay at base camp to take another groups campers down the hill to Horse Camp. 2 bad cases of altitude sickness. Tim decides to short rope right out of camp to make it easier on the girls. Tim is wise and this allowed the girls to be dragged along at a slow pace to begin the process of truly waking up. As i am walking down to Horse Camp with these girls, one from Ohio and the other from Mississippi they begin to feel better. One sprains her ankle in her boot so the trip becomes even more slow. They are troopers! Tough, tough girls. I drop them off at Horse Camp to some of there camp directors who stayed there over night. Time for me to go back up the hill and possibly still summit today... its going to be a very long day if I have to go up the mountain above base camp.
Once i get back to base camp Tim is there and tells me to take a quick nap to recharge and than when i wake up we will pack camp and split. This is music to my ears! One of our girls is in another group going for the summit, the rest are at base camp due to altitude. Tim took the girls up to 12,400 feet and they were done. Watched the sun come up and headed down. One brave girl says she will take all of the sag bags down, i feel she will soon regret this.
Down to Bunny Flat at 4:00pm and i have to wait around for other groups to get back so i can collect gear and make sure if anything is missing we give JH a bill. Back at SWS office at 5:30 put stuff away and get the hell out of dodge.

7-21-11
organize back room to make sure all the gear is labeled and put in the proper place. I detailed the back room as the climbing season is winding down pretty fast now. Looks spic and spam. One tent (my group) that didn't have the poles i now have to either find poles or make and chop a set of poles to fit to make due. I am a lucky dog today as i was able to find a set of poles, they are supper stiff but will work for this tent. set up tent outside to ensure poles will work. Tim K arrived so I was able to install a shower curtain, towel hooks, and entry way strip to cover the tile/carpet seem.

7-25-11
Start to go over every single tent in the inventory (about 30) making sure there are no holes and all poles are in working condition. Clean back room and organize helmets and ice axes.

7-26-11
more tents, and brought my screw gun down to put a few holes in the tile to mount the all important toilet paper dispenser. Put one more coating of tile sealer on the floor. I am getting very excited that i only have one more week to go.

Week 10/11 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling Week 10

My final week with the Cycling Program included leading one final campus tour to an athlete from Pennsylvania who could potentially come here in August. Luckily, the tour was during the week so all of the buildings were unlocked and we could show her around. The cycling team even treated her and her mother to lunch in the dining center.

The video projects were both completed. The campus tour video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mN7shmY8r8 and the Road Race course video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M80R1gziQBA&feature=related. Coach and I also shot more video of other roads around Columbia that display the beauty of the roads and countryside.

The cycling shed also was completed. Coach and I had to go to Jeffries hardware shop to get some hose and some other little things to help hang up a peg board. Taking out some of the excess trash from the shed to the trash container behind Cranmer was challenging because I had to carry it and walk it from place to place, but it was a good workout!

I also had to compile a list of athletes who I had talked to this summer who graduate from high school in 2012 and send them all a message letting them know that they can start applying for admission.

I am really excited that this internship is complete, although it was great learning all about the sport management side of the cycling team and developing a deeper relationship with Coach Grigsby. It was such a great experience and I am glad that I was given the chance to do an internship with the team.

--------------------
HWC Week 10

Week 10 of my Wellness Center internship included receiving the prizes for the Flab2Fab fitness challenge and making sure everything was accounted for. There was no weigh-in during this week, mainly because I would have gone over in my allowed hours at the Wellness Center, but also to hopefully allow for a larger weight loss for the participants for the final weigh-in. I could tell that some of the participants were upset that the program was almost over.

The Couch-2-5K program also came to an end on July 23, 2011 with the actual 5K event. Friday I had to go out and mark the course with flags and athletic spray on the road. I put arrows before, in, and after every turn so that it made it clear which way to go. I tried to make it as fool-proof as possible. One issue that I ran into was that Friday night I was told that the gates on Waterworks Street were not open, when I called twice and made sure they were going to open them. Saturday morning...EARLY morning... I went out on my bike and marked some more places and made sure the gates were open. They were open Saturday morning, which made my life better. We had 21 people complete the 5K and 12 of those people completed their first 5K that morning! It was super exciting and everyone loved it! They thanked me for hosting the 5K. I wish we would have had some sort of door prizes to give away to help wrap up the program and event.

HWC Week 11

Monday and Tuesday were my last two days of the program and of my internship! Monday I had to lead the final, last chance group workout for the participants. I also had to make sure that everything was in place for Tuesday. Tuesday was weigh-in day. We also did measurements to see how many inches were lost. Then we re-did the 5 minute step test. The group ended up losing 370 pounds and 232 inches! The 'Biggest Loser' lost 10.43% of her body weight! It was exciting to see everyone pretty happy with their results. The people who did not seem ecstatic about what they had done were the ones that I could tell did not give 100%, but I learned that I can really only provide so much help for them and that they are the ones that have to take it into their own hands and decide if they want it bad enough or not. We had prizes for the biggest losers and then a couple random prize drawings, too. Before everyone left I gave them an "end of program survey" to get feedback on their thoughts and what they would like to see to help improve the program if we have it again.

As soon as everyone left, I just stood in the room, took a deep breathe and felt mixed emotions - happiness and worry. I am happy that almost everyone who started the program finished and that some were so happy about their results. I am worried for some people because I can tell that they might slip off and go back to old, unhealthy habits and reverse everything that has been worked for in this program, but I told them that they can contact me anytime if they need motivation or someone to talk to anytime. It was such a beautiful experience - learning about myself and others and developing great friendships with amazing people.

Week 10- Daron Morris: The Pines at Lindsey Wilson

Sunday- On Sunday I arrived at the course at 6:15 am, I quickly began to bring carts up to clean and line up in front of the Pro-shop. After I finished bringing the carts up I started preparing the pro-shop for the day. I cleaned the bathrooms and stocked paper. After the bathrooms were ready I set up the cash register and prepared it for the day. I opened the proshop at 7 am. HTen we instantley became busy. So once again it was a busy but great day at The Pines.
Monday- On Monday I arrived at the course at 1:30. Monday was a very busy morning so when I got to the course I began helping. Most of our carts were used and dirty, so I cleaned and lined them up in front of the pro-shop. after everything settled down it was back to the normal day of checking guest and members in to play
Tuesday- On Tuesday I arrived at the course around 1:30 Tuesday was a pretty slow day. i had a little resting time before I got really busy for our "Tuesday Night Scramble." We had a great turn out of 20 players. I split teams into 5 team of 4. Everyone enjoyed the scramble!
Wednesday- I arrived at the course at 11:30. Wednesday was a really hot day. We didn't have many players comeout till around 5 because of the heat. It was way too hot to golf today. Most of the players we had come out were our regular members who play daily. So overall today was very slow.
Thursday- On thursday I arrived at the course at 1:30. This morning wasn't very busy so when I got there I didnt have too much to do. I just made sure everything was clean and running smoothly. Later in the afternoon I started getting players out. It is really hot out this time of year, so most of our players wait till the late afternoons when its not so hot to come out and play.

Overall- I can't believe my internship is already over!!! These 10 weeks have went by super fast. I really enjoyed my experience here at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson. I learned many valuable lessons and many different tips to managing not just a golf course but a business in general. I really learned alot working with James. He is a great manger and he has taught me the most efficient but most effective ways to managing a golf course.

Thanks Dr. Day for allowing me the opportunity to complete my internship at The Pines, This was a great experience!

Zach Prichard-Week 10-Graceland Baptist Church

Well ladies and gentlemen, it was my final week, and it couldn't of been any harder. This week was from Monday-Monday the 25th. It started off last Monday with being a pretty easy day, there wasn't a whole lot to do except clean up the fields, and finish cataloging the t-shirts. Karen let me go around 2:30 that day because the week was going to be long and hot. Tuesday morning I came in around 7:15 am, Karen was going to have me work with Gary, our groundskeeper and his assistant Blaire, and then a man named George, he is retired, but likes to help out at the church from time to time. The main goal of Tuesday was to cut and haul all the steel that was laying around the new soccer field, and the behind the bus barn. There were 8 huge bleacher seats that needed to be cut into two's so they could fit on the trailer, so we had to load those in the trailer and have half of it hanging off so Gary could cut through them with the cutting torch. Once that was finished, we went behind the bus barn and started cutting through more pieces of steel that wouldn't fit on the trailer and loading it on there. There were also very big steel cabinets that needed to be broken down so they could fit on the trailer, so George got on the back-ho and used the bucket and the arm to crush them. The worst part of Tuesday wasn't the heavy pieces of steel, or how hot it was (115 degrees), it was when Gary was cutting a piece of steel in half, George picked it up and backed it up right into my shin, now when you cut steel, the torch burns at around 1,000 degrees, so both pieces are going to be very hot. My leg burned for many hours. After we got the trailer loaded up till it was full, Blaire and I went to the new soccer fields, and raked up more grass that was left there from the mowers, this took up the time it took for them to get the trailer unloaded and coming back. When they got back, we started all over again and loaded up one more truck load. I got off Wednesday cause my week was going to be pretty full. Thursday was the same thing as Tuesday, we had more steel to load up and cut, and George and I got on the lawn mowers and cut the fields next to the tennis court and the pond. Once that was finished, Karen wanted me to get the grass that was growing on the pitchers mound off. So I had to grab a hoe and cut up the grass and then rake it up and dump it. Once this was done, Gary, Karen, and I had to line the soccer fields. This took the remainder of the day. It wasn't hard, but it was so hot. I probably drank 12 bottles of water that day. We also set up the soccer goals too, and Karen let me go while she finished up putting on their nets. Friday I got off as well since the tournament started Saturday and was going to run through Monday. Saturday came and I had to get their around 7 am to get the field ready for the 1st game that was at 9 am. Saturday ran smoothly except for some argumentative parents who didn't like the calls being made, but with any sport, your going to get that. Sunday the games started at 2 and run through 8 pm, so after church I got the field ready and sat around to watch the games, because in between games I had to drag the fields, and re-chalk the lines and batters boxes. Today was a little more hectic than the last, mainly because the team from Henryville wasn't following the rules laid out by the director. Technically they were, but they found a loop hole in the system. The "real" ruling was that no child can pitch more than 6 innings in 2 consecutive games. This meant that if a player pitches 6 innings, (which is how long the games were being played) he couldn't pitch for 24 hrs. What Henryville was doing was if they had a double header, they pitched their best pitcher the 1st game for 6 innings, and then came back the next day and pitched him again. This is totally wrong, and its going to hurt this kid in the long run. He pitched 105 pitches on Saturday at 9 am and then came back and pitched again on Sunday at 2 pm. Technically that is 24 hrs, but the rule should have stated no player can pitch more than 6 innings in 2 consecutive days. This would of solved the problem. So basically Henryville made it to the finals on Monday, and they ended up winning. I got lots of thanks and praise on Monday for all the work that I did, and Karen was begging me to come back this next week to help her with the 8U tournament. Thats the end of my internship, and boy I couldn't be happier, now it's time to find a real job! Oh joy!

Week 8 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

7-12-11
Today the bathroom is complete and ready to be used to its full potential! I finished installing all of the small detail work like the shower controls and various knobs.

7-14-11
packed bags and duffel's for trip preparation for a trip I will be going on with Crit tomorrow. New tents arrived today from BD. Squall "E" & "F" put guide lines on and labeled body, fly, and stuff sack accordingly. Grocery store run to make food for trip. Today was the first time I was fully able to see how everything will effect a trip, and it will be my trip with Crit. Detailed prep work for food and to make sure we calculate the correct amount of fuel to bring up is crucial. Fuel is a big catch 22, if you don't bring enough you will not be able to melt snow down for water and cook food, if you bring too much well you just have to carry extra weight, and no one like extra weight! Mountain guides are ounce counters. The saying goes ounces leads to pounds when it comes to shaving undesired weight off the pack.

7-15-11
meet clients at office to go over packing and do a pack check of what the appropriate clothing should be. Climb to 50/50. (9,600 feet) 50/50 being about the halfway point to summit. Camp on snow. Melt water, Now is the time i am glad i spent the detailed prep work for the trip for food. Tonight's meal mountain style burritos chosen by myself. The meal was a success! clients really enjoyed it. put clients in bed early, talk with Crit about the upcoming summit day.

7-16-11
On Shasta, ice axe/crampon clinic. easy day.

7-17-11
breakfast. melt water. Crampon/ice axe clinic with other various knowledge from Crit with a question and answer period. dinner and bed time to summit tomorrow. clients are reasonably self sufficient but shouting time like we have 2 minutes till we are rolling is a great tool.7-16-11
wake up 2:00 am/ get moving on breakfast melt water for ascent. get moving and going at 3:15am with headlamps up the mountain. make it to Helen at 4am. Crit short ropes clients in to him. i decide to 'free ranger' it for the day. clients don't have this option. make red banks just after sun up (12,600 feet). continue up short hill to misery hill, than summit hill. On top of summit at 10:15-10:30am. take a few pictures and get the hell off to a sheltered area. winds today are a consistent 50ish+ miles per hour gusts. I am thankful for good gear, but face, and hands are almost numb even with good gear. part of being a mountain guide. Now the descent... Back at office at around 4:30pm. long day but this is typical of a summit day.

Crit has taught me a lot of great things on this trip. It takes someone who does this day in and day out to teach me the newbie all of the hidden tricks of the trade. Dealing with clients is the hardest part for me. the hard skills like climbing and crampon technique i feel i have down well enough, the soft skills is a learning process i need to improve on.

7-18-11
back at the office. Prep JH Ranch trip with Tim Peterson. 33 kids will be going up the mountain tomorrow, this is a crazy group to deal with. I will be back on the mountain tomorrow this time for a two day trip.

Week 6 - Edie Foley - MWR

Edie Foley
July 13, 2011 – Wednesday

This morning I had my Journey class from 7-8am which didn’t go as planned. A lot of people I talked to about attending the class said they couldn’t get themselves up that earlier or that they didn’t want to run in the heat so this made it more official to change for August. Since I didn’t have this class, I was able to set up for Stroller Rollers to be more prepared if I had another large group comes in. Both classes are ran the same and this morning both classes had at least 7 parents with their kids. I was able to set up an obstacle course for the kids to keep them occupied while I explain the station workouts for the parents. I liked the stations because then I know each mom is doing some kind of workout then we rotated every 1.5 minutes. They really seemed to like the stations because I gave them a goal to try and reach in that amount of time. As always, the 1st class is always the talkers, then the 2nd class is the motivators, although it took about 30 minutes cleaning up after this class, but it was most defiantly worth it. After this, I had to meet with the P.R. guy because he had my flyers for my event printed out and designed along with 2 posters so I had to start putting them up in locations for the patrons to see. I was really impressed with the way they turned out and I’m already encountering people that are excited about it and PT command groups that are attending. I can’t wait for it myself! When I finished with these I got to leave work at 2:30 (early) because I had a doctor’s appt. My boss is really strict on health so she had no problem with working around that.

This morning I came in a little earlier than usually to make up for the hour I missed yesterday from the doctor’s. I mainly worked on fitness scheduling and making out new prescriptions for next week. I always use my Thursday mainly for prescription making for the next week. Today I spent time to set up and reserve items for my event along with researching tire shops to get some tires donated for my event. I then finished with my flyer hanging which consisted of me driving to the Nuclear Power School, then down to the Officer housing where the 2nd fitness gym is located and finishing with the ITT outdoor facility. I’m hoping to get a good turn out for this event because I have sponsors involved. I worked the late shift tonight so I helped the fitness center out by cleaning my building and vacuuming. I’m learning a lot of the responsibilities so that I can help run the fitness center if needed. I’m also learning that there is always something that needs to be done around base that everyone gets involved in such as cleaning, organizing, making sure all equipment is working and all the basketballs, footballs, etc have a good amount of air, etc. Right before I got off work I had to send out a lot of emails for Nancy, my boss, about equipment and questions she had so the job also involves a lot of communication.

Today was a rough day so everything I did seemed 10 times as hard. I had family coming in so I didn’t sleep well and work was busier today than it had been all week. The morning started off with command PT where a unit comes in and Riley, the trainer, and I set up some things for the unit to do to get their fitness exercise in for the day. After this I had 2 classes of “Stroller Rollers” which had more people than usual but I had a good circuit training system set up so that part went smoothly and they loved it. The baby sitting the kids running around on the other hand wasn’t so easy. It’s really hard trying to be the instructor and babysit kids at the same time but I will be watching the kids when the actual instructor comes back in mid August. Right now it’s just a rough stage. After the 2 classes, I had to run errands for Nancy and Greg trying to get 2 events set up. One is the event I’m doing for my Project, and the other is one I’m just doing to be doing but they are both big and are getting sponsors already. It’s more stressful because I don’t have much guidance or help. I just got told it was okay to do the event, then that was it. Everything else I’m having to research and find along with reserving equipment for the day. Then going to the NNPTC (Nuclear Power base) to try and get Navy volunteers to help me with this event. Luckily I have a friend that is from that base so he’s the only one that’s given me good advice on how to get people to help me work this. So today was just a stressful day of trying to get things done for this event before I left work. I then had a class I ran from 2-3pm but because it’s a Friday, for the fitness classes we usually get little to no people in because most active duty is off on weekends. Today I set up but didn’t have any participants so instead I had to send out more emails about the event I am doing and call more people that have left their numbers having questions on the event. It’s most definitely been one of those days.

Today I only worked for an hour because I have a Interval run/walk class I do in the morning 7-8am before the heat comes. I had a couple of people participate who loved the class and were sore the next day including myself. I learned that it’s hard to run a class that involves running when you have a guy attending because guys can run faster than girls. I am still coming up with a solution to either change the class or find a better way to work with both male and female runners.

This morning I came in regular hours so I was able to help out with command PT with a unit. I learn a lot from helping out because it gives me different ideas on what I can do with an exercise group and I learn about how much to push them until exhaustion. I took some new ideas from this PT and used them in my own class that I instruct which is circuit training. After this PT, I had both of my Stroller Rollers classes that went very well. It seems to be easier to have them doing the circuit training while I keep time because they switch stations every 1.5 minutes while I watch the kids and try keeping them out of the way. I use to do the workout with them until the kids began to be a handful; therefore, doing the circuit training and being in their watching kids seems to be the best way to work this class. After this class, there were people I had to call about some events I am wanting to do on base, along with setting up times and place of where to pick up the items that I will need for my event next Friday. Once again, it’s a lot more work doing it alone than as if someone were to guide me. I also had more errands to run for Nancy because since the Air Force base and Navy base are now joint bases, the Air Force is putting in new rules and regulations, trying to make the Navy base look more up to date. My job was to go around checking all the dates on flyers, re-writing so rules and regulation signs, checking for places to put the new signs, etc. It was a lot of running around most of the day so I was beat when it was time to get off work.

July 19, 2011 – Tuesday

Today we started INDOC at 7:30am instead of 8:00 because of the heat index being so extreme. I really enjoy running the INDOC PT because I get to instruct the Navy guys on how to do the workout they will be doing at my station. It’s a great feeling being able to encourage them but having to still yell at them because of their lack of fitness. I’ve learned to watch the group as well because to not call a certain person out to get a drink, if there is someone looking sick or pale, I call the whole unit for a water break so no one is being pointed out. After INDOC, I was able to get a donation of tires from a local car shop for my event I will be doing next Friday. They were glad to help so I had to take the Air Force/Navy truck down to pick them up. When I got back on base and settled things back down, it was my first day I would be instructing the “Teen INDOC” boot camp hour class that was asked to create from the Teen Center. I had ran this teen INDOC a lot similar to the INDOC the Navy men have to go through so the kids can feel like they are part of the military. I quickly realized, even though some kids may be small, they are very badly out of shape. A lot of them left complaining their muscles hurt, so this class became a favorite for me really quick. After this training, I had to go to a trainers meeting with Riley (Personal Trainer) and Nancy (my boss) to talk about things going on within base. Riley and I also have to get recertified for CPR training so the rest of the day after my running around through town and base, we went through the practice learning round of getting our CPR license. After this, I helped Nancy sanitize all the manikins along with cleaning the building area a little. When these tasks were done, I was out of there.

Daron Morris- Week 9: The Pines at Lindsey Wilson

Sunday- Sunday I worked the closing shift. I came in at 12 o' clock and closed at 9. I started off my day with making sure everything was running correctly. I continued to check players in on the tee sheet and keep the carts cleaned and lined up and ready for play
Monday- Monday I worked the closing shift again. Today was pretty slow. We didnt have many player in the afternoon. Its not really a surprise, because mondays are always slow. I closed the proshop and did the bank deposit. I was able to close up at 8:45 tonight.
Tuesday-This tuesday I once again worked the closing shift. I wasnt too busy today until around 5 o' clock. everyone started arriving for our weekly tuesday night scramble. We had a descent croud of 16 players. We're still trying to get the word out and try to bring more people out to play.
Friday-FRiday i Worked the opening shift. I arrived at the course at 6:15. I quickly began to wash carts and get them ready for play. Friday wassnt very busy. We ended up getting rain for most of the morning. Then around 1 o' clock it got extremely hot. It was way to hot for anybody to want to play golf. So in other words it was an extremely slow morning for me.
Saturday- Saturday I came into work at 12 and worked till 9 o' clock. I had a very busy day, from the time i arrived at work I instantly had a big group of 16 players come from out of town. We always try to go out of our way to make sure they eoy their visit at The Pines. Not that we dont do the same for everyone, but we really want to give guest a reason to come back.

Week 9 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling Week 9

Week 9 of my Cycling internship included helping schedule two campus tours for potential athletes. I also had to travel to Jeffrey's shop next to Five Star to purchase some bug bombs to help kill some of the remaining spiders and bugs in the cycling shed next to the Career Services Center. I learned how to charge something to the Lindsey Wilson College account at Jeffrey's which was cool to learn to do that. I also spent time at the mountain bike property near Summit Manor spraying weed killer on some of the really grown weeds. It was extremely hot outside and Coach and I had to fill up the tank with water and weed killer three times to cover the dual slalom track.

Coach and I also did the voice over portion of the video project for the road race course. It was really fun doing that with Travis and Coach. Some of the bloopers are going to be hilarious. We had 25 (or so) minutes of video and we wanted to get it to 10 minutes or less. On some of the parts that there is not narration Travis had to speed it up to 2000%. It seems like it would be too fast, but it was actually a great speed and you could still see everything clearly.

Saturday included leading a tour for a potential athlete from near Nashville, Tennessee. It was great to give a tour to a potential athlete, again, but the bad part about a tour on a Saturday in summer is that most of the facilities are locked. We typically show Slider, the Athletic Trainer's room, some dorm rooms, but they were locked. We managed to still give a good tour and we answered as many questions as we could.

HWC Week 9

Week 9 of the Wellness Center internship included reaching out to Wal-Mart and Cafe on the Square, as they have offered to donate gifts to the challenge which ends on the 26th of July. The group also lost about 25 pounds at the weigh-in, so that puts the total weight lost at about 330 pounds. I told the group that there would not be a week 7 weigh in (July 19, 2011) because I wanted them to see how they did on their own. In a way it makes me nervous because some of them will continue on towards the final weigh-in, but some will not and I will continually hear excuses about this and that. That is just part of the job, though.

I finalized the 5K course last week and it is actually quite challenging because of the rolling hills here, but it is doable, for sure. There were only five people that came to the Couch-2-5K training on Saturday morning. It was a cool Saturday morning, which was only one week before the actual 5K event on July 23, 2011. Since it was a small group, we ended up running the 5K course since they asked nicely. They had a great time and it was nice to hear feedback from people. One more full week of internships, followed by two days after week 10 is complete. Looking forward to the small break!

Zach Prichard-Week 9-Graceland Baptist Church

This is week 9, the 11th-15th. This was another hot week, and kind of a slow week. Karen didn't have a lot of work for me to do, just a bunch of odd's and ends. Week 10 will be the tournament and the Soccer Evaluation. Karens kind of upset cause there is another tournament on the week of the 25th and I will be done with my internship, and she's really not wanting to actually have to do work again. This week folded more shirts, and me and Karen went through the baseball equipment that the coaches turned back in and made sure things were still usable, and they each had the same stuff in there. I also had to run some errands for Karen, going to pick up soccer balls, and bags to put them in to. I had to go back through the soccer ball bags and check to see if any balls were more deflated than others, and if they were then I replaced them with the new balls we just picked up. I also had to work outside with this guy named George, we had to fill in some holes at the new soccer fields. The holes were made by the old fence posts, and there were some pretty substantially large sized holes. And we had to pull up a couple of post that they missed, and they had about 3-4ft of concrete in the ground, so this was not easy one bit. After that I had to do the fields, and get them ready for practices again. I worked Wednesday instead of taking off, and decided to take off Friday. So I worked Monday through Thursday, and went in every day at 9. This next week I'm gonna have to go in at 8 am. Not looking forward to that.

Zach Prichard-Week 8-Graceland Baptist Church

Week 8 was Tuesday through Tuesday July 5th-July 8th, Sorry I'm a little messed up on my posts, Ive been so busy with making contacts, and working with Karen. Don't let anyone ever tell you that it gets easier after college, I'd give anything to be able to go back to Lindsey after this summer. Any way, this past week there wasn't a whole lot of actual recreation stuff to be done, but there was a lot of work that needed to be done. I was given the excellent opportunity to mop not one but two gym floors, and I'm talking about big gym floors. Once I got done mopping the gym floors, I had to buff them with the buffer. This wasn't hard by any means, but it was very time consuming. You couldn't go very fast with the buffer, but you couldn't go too slow cause it would burn the floor. So it was very difficult to find the in between speed that was needed. All of this while still maintaining the fields for practices. This upcoming week will be the first baseball tournament at Graceland, it will be going on during the soccer evaluations, so I will be doing the baseball tournament and Karen will be running the soccer evaluations. Anyway, back to this week. This week was the hottest week in Indiana so far this summer, Monday was a nice and cool 115 degrees, and I had to be outside raking up grass that wasn't caught by the lawn mower, not fun... I had to work inside the equipment room again, and I believe, we finally got the entire equipment room all organized and taken care of. The only thing left to do in there now is label the shelves. Another part of last week was preparing for the equipment exchange program we will be running. Since another group is having a box in the front room of the auditorium, we can't have one there as well. So we are setting up dates for people to come by and bring stuff and pick stuff up. We will have a box available to drop stuff off at the office, and at the soccer evaluations. Also, since last week was the 4th of july weekend, there was plenty of cleanup on the baseball fields. People just don't seem to understand that the church is private property, and you can not trespass on our premisses. We had a break in at the concession stand, and apparently it was actually better than the previous times they have broken in. All the took was candy, so you automatically knew it was kids. They only took Skittles sours. There was about a $750 grill in there, but no money, and plenty of drinks. They kicked in the door, and smashed out the window. I was pretty upset, I mean who steals from a church? Karen said that in previous break ins they took the ketchup and mustard bottles and squirted them everywhere. I was very glad they didn't do that this time. Well that was about all the stuff that happened this past week. Ive already finished week 9, I'm a little messed up on my posts on when I've been turning them in. I just got paid for week 9, and next week the week of July 18th-22nd will be my last week, week 10. I'm gonna go ahead and post week 9 because I'm so confused. My last day is the 25th, so the week of the 18th-22nd will be my final post and I will post that on Monday the 25th.

WEEK 5 - Edie Foley - MWR

Today I came in a little before 7:00am because I just started a running fitness class this week. I didn’t have anyone because a lot of military personnel are still on holiday leave. So instead I started getting ready for my next class I instruct, Stroller Rollers. I didn’t get some of the work out stations started because there weren’t many people on base from the holiday. Turns out, I didn’t have anyone for the first class but I had only 2 for the second. I did with them the same thing I would have done if there were a lot of people there. I like the small classes the most because it is more one on one and the kids aren’t as wild! After this, I helped out in the fitness center with checking IDs and cleaning up along with building onto my special project and getting advice from staff that are above me. While in the fitness center, I was able to help people out with getting involved in fitness classes along with showing them around the fitness center as well. I worked until 6:30pm tonight so I had a training class I had to attend at the end of my shift that was a 1 ½ hours. I like ending with a workout because I feel accomplished when I’m beat tired.

Today I came in and started planning for my new class I will be starting called “Teen INDOC”. It’s for teens during the summer to get them active and off the streets. I was asked to start something fitness related for them so most of today were planning different workouts for different times we meet so they don’t get bored doing the same thing. I didn’t think the planning would be hard but when I have to think if it’s something I can do outside or in that begins to become a problem because everything you use on base has to be reserved. As for the weather, doing things outside is risky because at times we have black flag on base which means severe heat index. While doing this I had to run errands for both my bosses who ran me to death making phone calls to patrons along with checking all bulletins. What I do on busy days is making a list of my duties then go through them as quickly as possible. Today was harder because I tried getting things done so Friday would be more relaxing when Dr. Day came to visit. The things I didn’t get done, I left for Monday to be done first thing. I was able to catch someone new in the fitness center and con him into coming to a workout class that night so I felt like a good sales fitness girl because I got a patron to come to some fitness classes. Since there was a black flag today I felt like I worked twice as hard as I normally do because it was so hot doing things outside. So I was more than thankful to be off work when I got done.

Thank God it’s Friday. This morning Dr. Day came to work with me so it was a more relaxing day giving the tour of base, although my fitness classes made up for not doing a lot of paperwork and errands. For my Roller Stroller classes, I didn’t have many because it’s still holiday weekend leave for most families on base. My boss, Nancy, was able to come around lunch along with taking us out to eat which excited me because she stays busy most of the day. She’s always better at giving tours than I because she knows more of the history of the base. Today I started my new fitness class “Just go with it” and had 1 participant who was from the Nuclear Power School on base. Most Nucs don’t come because they have to drive here and don’t usually have a car coming out of Boot Camp so I was lucky to have one. I treated him just like I would have if I had a full class. I was happy to see him having to take breaks because it lets me know failure is success! After I instructed this class, I attend one before my shift was over called S.E.C. training which is Strength & Endurance Core Training. From doing 3 classes earlier, by the time I participated in this class, I was beat and ready to leave. I am aloud to go to fitness classes on clock because I had to take notes on how each class is instructed as part of a learning session. I love this but sometimes all the classes in one day really do a number on me!

This morning I only worked an hour because I instruct a running class. This was my first running class… which I ended up learning a lot from! When I got to work, no one was here and I wasn’t given a key to my building which is where my running shoes were. So instead I had to run back home, get my other tennis shoes (which aren’t made for running) and run in them. Luckily the 2 people that attended this morning were very understanding and patient so they didn’t mind starting 30 mins late. When I practiced this class, the class turns out to be a 2.5 mile walk/run class. This morning, we got lost on a trail but it was fun doing it with them because they were so optimistic about it. One of the signs had fallen over which took us on a long route. I was familiar with the names of the routes once I found a sign that had the names. This made me realize that it’s better to mark trees along with the signs on the trails. The tree markings are good for a 2nd back up. I also had bad blisters from running in the shoes I had to run in so this morning wasn’t a good morning for me. Along with all this, I realized the earlier you run a trail, the more spiders will be out trapping you down the trails. This class has now changed for the August schedule to be inside as an Interval treadmill run. If it wasn’t so hot here, I would do it later in the day, but because of the heat, it really limits time to run outdoors.

This morning Dr. Day left so it was sad knowing I was back to going places alone and learning places on my own through the city. Instead of helping Riley with Command PT this morning, I took time to set up the Stroller Rollers class because I was introducing “Band Bags” which is a drawstring bag for the parents that includes 7 different kinds of bands with an instruction book. I was very surprised when both these classes were over because I had more people than I ever imagined! They were busy classes so I just took time explaining each of the bands and letting the moms get used to using them on their own. They really loved having time to go through the book on their own and trying out the new workouts. I mainly walked around and answered ALL their questions and showing them how some of the workouts worked. After this class, I finished up on some errands I didn’t finish last Thursday then set up for my circuit training class. Today this class didn’t go as planned because I only had one person. I planned on more people attending but my boss said it would take time for more people to attend because everyone here runs off of the “buddy system” which means they won’t come unless they have a friend coming with them. The girl that came really loved the class and bragged on how much she got done so this was more motivation for me than I thought. I got off at 3:30pm today so after the cleaning up of my class it was time to leave. Thank goodness.

INDOC this morning when I got to work was probably one of the biggest squadrons that we’ve had. We focused more on relay fitness because it was cardio for the Nucs and was easier to perform for bigger groups. The heat index was high this morning so as the morning went on it got hotter. Along with it getting hotter, the hotter it got, the more Nucs we had vomiting and had 1 pass out. Since this had happened, it was made official after INDOC that we would start 30 minutes earlier to avoid the heat failing out the Nucs during their workout. When I came back to my office I had to go to my other boss, Greg, to do some work for him. I had to call people who put in their applications to the fitness center and do a questionnaire on the phone with them to see if they are committed and met the requirements to come in for a personal interview. I liked doing this because I love talking to people. The hard part was going through all the applications calling the applicants from highest to lowest rank in the military. After all the paperwork, I had a meeting with the Teen Center coordinator about the Teen INDOC I will be doing for their teens. There were some time conflictions which led me to changing some of my fitness classes for the month of August because of school. This meeting was about 1 ½ hours so it took up a lot of my day. After this meeting I had another meeting for trainers I had to attend about where I and Riley are at in our fitness schedules following with a meeting with my boss about my personal schedule for my fitness classes. She just started a fitness class as well so she understands the frustration when no one shows up but it’s just part of the growing process. After this meeting I was done for the day!

Week 8-Daron Morris: The Pines at Lindsey Wilson

Week 8 was another busy week with running the Golf Course. This week we really focused on reaching out to the community trying to get more members to join. We had a few members join since our new member rates have started, but we have no where near the number we want. I think we will start to pick up many more members towards the end of the summer.
Sunday-I worked the closing shift, therefore i arrived at the course at 1:30. I began to sign in players and organize our proshop. We have been working on re-arranging the inside of our pro-shop all weekend. I stayed busy throughout the day.
Monday- I arrived at the course again at 1:30. Monday was a once again like any other monday, pretty slow. I was able to finialize most of my project since we weren't very busy.
Wednesday-I arrived at the course at 6:15 a.m. I quickly began to wash and line up carts outside the club house. The morning was pretty slow until around lunch time. We had many players come out to eat at the Muligans Resturant. Then most of them went out to play. We dont expect to much play this early in the week, so any extra players is always better. Wednesdya turned out to be a great day for The Pines.
Thursday-Thursday was another great day at The Pines. I arrived at the course at 6:15 am. I went through my normal opening shift routine of washing carts then lining them up in front of the pro-shop. I open the proshop at 7 am and prepare for the day. Today I had to switch out all of our pespi products with the new coke products. Now that Lindsey has switched to coke we also switched to coke. I spent eh majority of my day switching over to the coke products.
Friday- I arrived at the course at 11:30, I wanted to get there a few mintues early to make sure nothing was behind. Once i prepared everythng my day was set. All I had to do today was make sure everyone enoyed their round of golf. Pretty easy day!

Week 8 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling Week 8

Week 8 of my Cycling internship mainly involved focusing on the video projects. I worked with Travis Smith and Coach Grigsby to basically do a video tour of the campus and some of the college facilities. It was a fun experience, yet it made me nervous at the same time because I was the one on camera and I wanted to look good and to make sure that I did not sound like an idiot. Coach and Travis said that I did a fine job, but some of the outtakes for the video are going to be hilarious.

We also spent time video taping our race loop to show how beautiful the roads are around here. It was a pretty time consuming effort because of video camera issues and having to drive the car way below the speed limit, but it was neat to see the roads in a different perspective. It is going to be a great tool, when it is finished, to help potential athletes see what some of the roads are like here at Lindsey Wilson College.

One last part of the video project that I have to do is do a voice over for the race loop video to describe some of the areas - the climb inclines, mileage, etc.

I also spent some time developing a relationship with some more potential athletes from outside of the United States. Some of them are immediately trying to apply to Lindsey Wilson which is awesome!

HWC Week 8

Week 8 of the internship at the Wellness Center included continuing to reach out to potential sponsors and donors. With the 5K and the end of the Flab2Fab Fitness challenge coming up rather rapidly, it is important to have some sort of prizes, although since both are free programs there is not a reason I HAVE to have prizes, but people like free things.

The fifth weight in for the Flab2Fab Fitness Challenge resulted in about 35 pounds lost. Compared to the 14 pounds from the previous week, I was exstatic. At the five week point, the group as a whole has lost over 300 pounds! There are still three weigh-ins left, so I am hoping the group can get another 100 pounds off, but as long as people are making changes in their lifestyle and they are satisfied with how their clothes fit, and such, I will be satisfied! The program is a success so far!

There were 12 people that came to the Couch-2-5K training day on Saturday, which was exciting. It was a perfect morning to hold a workout outside. I made them do interval training to elevate the heart rate, then recover, then raise it again, then recover. It was successful and everyone enjoyed the workout. Well, they at least enjoyed when it was over.

Week 7 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

Week seven begins my special project week, along with the progression of learning from Dave.

For my special project at SWS Mountain Guides, I will be remodeling the bathroom. I enjoy laying tile, the best part for me about this special project is I will get to see something that goes from outdated to showroom quality in just a few days. SWS only has one bathroom and this bathroom is not the cleanest looking bathroom even when it is clean. At this current state on the bathroom there is a retro baby blue toilet, stained linoleum flooring, outdated facets, creaky flooring under the shower, and a terrible paint job inside. By remodeling this bathroom for my special project it will provide clients and staff a cleaner more modern feeling inside the building.

I will be in charge for my special project during the remodeling period by assisting in the demolition phase, and when the time comes to tiling the whole bathroom I will be the boss (as I am the only tile guy in the building), and will come up with all of the detailed tile designs. I am anticipating that this bathroom remodel will take 5 days total. I am anticipating that the demolition phase will only take one day, along with moving the plumbing around in the shower. Day two will consist of putting hardy backer on the walls and floor to begin laying tile down on the main floor surrounding the bathroom vanity and toilet. Day 3 of this special project will be tiling the shower and doing finishing details on tile work and grouting the floor in. Day 4 will be to finish grouting the shower in, install a new toilet, and put tile sealer on the floor while putting in a new bathroom vanity. Day 5 will be to put tile sealer in the shower and do bead molding
around the vanity to complete this special project.

The founder of SWS Tim Keating is supplying materials for this bathroom remodel. Tim is shopping around for the best deals on tile, vanities, toilets and everything needed to do this remodel as cheap as possible. Tim has already purchased a earth tone tile with a decorative strip to match. I will be supplying the tools in regards to the tile work. I have my own tile saw, tile circular saw, and multiple grouting tools to help me on this project. I am excited to do what I love to do in regards to tile work to give SWS a new and improved bathroom.

So far the bathroom is right on schedule and is looking awesome!

Week 6 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

6-29-11 - 6/30/11
My first trip up on Shasta with lead guide Brady. Today started with meeting clients at the office and doing a pack check to ensure clients have proper and adequate gear. Lucky me, my pack only weighs in at 56 pounds today! In the parking lot at bunny flat at 7,000 feet to start the day. Weather is misting rain and visibility is cut down. Brady makes the call to camp at horse camp instead of 50/50 due to weather and snow conditions. I am beginning to process what is going through his head as a guide. Brady makes the right call as the clients are beginning to be soaked from the rain. We teach the clients how to self arrest/self belay, crampon techniques, and how to use the ice axe properly.

We dig tents in for the night, cook dinner and go over the trip plan for tomorrow. Put clients in bed at 7:30 and I walk off with Brady to discuss my role, and weather for tomorrow's day. In bed at 8:30. Wake up at 12:00. Get water going for breakfast, make sure clients have all the proper gear. On our way up the mountain at 1:00am. We stop at 3:30-4:00. We hear water peculating under the snow, literally sounds like we are on top of a river. Snow conditions are bad. we had snow two days previous and it has been supper hot on the mountain following the snow. Consistent rock fall as we hike, and its only going to get worse about 10,000 feet in the gully. Avalanche danger is high due to the weather and snow conditions. We make the call to turn around. It will be unsafe to continue. arrive back to camp just in time to see the sun rise. Sleep for 1:30 min and pack up and head off the mountain.

This trip taught me how rough mountaineering can be. Good Black Diamond equipment is essential! Glad I made the investment. it is a completely different world up at elevation and in the snow. conditions can be unpredictable and on this trip you have to absolutely put safety 100% first and put making the summit 14,289 feet second.

7-1-11
Cleaned MSR stoves from the JH Ranch trip. Needed to be done badly. Tent repair from JH ranch trip and look over all tent bodies for major problems. Fixed holes with seem grip.

7-2-11
Arrived at SWS to do a porter run for today. A porter run is when a client purchases the option of having someone carry all or on this case most of their gear one way (up to 50lbs) my trip would be up the hill. I skinned up to 50/50 on skis dropped her gear off and skied down the hill. Crappy snow conditions, pure slush, porter run took all day. skiing down Shasta even though the snow was crap was by far the best part of the day. Cleaned house.

7-3-11
Returning clients, unpack tents, hang to dry, look over, pack up and put in back room. Worked in the herb garden. Planted some wild onion that i brought from home. Washed rope. All ropes are now washed in the line up.

Week 7- Daron Morris: The Pines at Lindsey Wilson

Sunday- On Sunday I arrived at the course at 6:15 a.m. As soon as I got to there i began washing and lining up carts. I opened the pro-shop at 7 a.m. and right away we started getting customer's. It was no surprise to me, because we are always busy on sunday mornings. Most of our players were members but we had a few guest out towards the afternoon.
Monday- On Monday arrived at the golf course at 11:30a.m. I had a bite to eat at Mulligan's Resturant before i went into to work. I began work at 12.m. Today was just a normal pro-shop day. We didn't have any special events or tournaments going on. So all I had to do was keep the customers happy, keep up the tee sheet, and make sure everything was running smoothly.
Tuesday- On Tuesday I arrived at the course at 11:45 a.m. with just enough time to get everything caught up and prepared for teh rest of the day. We didn't have a really big croud today until our Tuesday Night Scramble started. We had the most people play since I have been here this summer. There were 20 players. I divided them into 4 teams of 5, it was a great turn out for tuesday night. It would be awesome if we could continue to get more players.
Friday- On Friday I arrived to the course at 2 p.m. From 2pm to 5 pm we were really busy. Once 5 o' clock rolled around everybody was gone. There was no one else on the course. So from then on it was a slow friday night at The Pines.
Saturday- On Saturday I arrived at the course at 11:30. I didnt have to work till 12 but I wanted to make sure we were not behind on anything. Saturday's are pretty busy and it is easy to get behind, especially if there is only one person working. Overall Saturday turned out to be a great day. So all I had to do was check players in and out and keep an up-to-date tee sheet.

Zach Prichard-Week 6-Graceland Baptist Church

Week 6 is a little bit of the same like last week. This week is Saturday-Saturday, June 25th-July 2nd. Well after just completing our Awards program we are setting up teams for All-Stars. We break down each age group into a single team that will represent Graceland at a few tournaments. Karen has agreed to pay for 1 tournament for each team, and we are going to host a tournament, so if the teams choose to play more than that than it will have to come out of their pockets. Karen has also agreed to pay $10.00 per kid as well, this will help pay for their hats, uniforms, and socks. Most of the teams are trying to get sponsors so they can get more gear, and better stuff. This week up and coming will be the first of the 3 tournaments Graceland will put on for All-Stars. I had to do more work this past week in the equipment room, which is never fun, because its hot in their, there isn't anything to look at and your back there all by yourself. This week I was finishing up airing up all the soccer balls, and then putting them into bags of 6 balls in each bag. There are 3 different sizes in which the kids will play with this year, size 5, 4, 3. We needed 6 bags of size 5's with 6 balls in each, and 10 bags of size 4 with 6 balls in each, and 6 bags of size 3 with 6 balls in each. The main reason for airing up all the balls now is because one, thats a lot of balls and they need time to deflate in case they are bad, and we need to see if we have enough balls, and if not we need to order them in the correct size. So I finished up airing up all the balls we had, and then calculate how many we were short. And then the worst part of the week happened, Karen wanted me to go up in the lift and start taping up the ceiling with the ceiling tape, and I wasn't too sure about that. The ceiling ranges from 25 ft to probably 40 ft. Now I'm not afraid of heights by any means, but what I am afraid of is incompetent equipment. I at least tried to go up in the lift, and the whole way up I'm sweating, and the lift is swaying back and forth. I got to the top and automatically told Karen that I couldn't do it, and I was sorry. She understood, and just said that I'll be the one to mop and buff the floors. If thats all I needed to do to get out of that then I'll gladly to it. Friday came along and You (Dr. Day) came to visit! The visit was great, it was great to see a familiar face again thats for sure. We sat in the office and talked about things, and then took her on a tour of the facilities, and then that was it. Since Monday was July 4th, my next post will be from Tuesday July 5th-July 12th. See ya then!

Today was a start of the Stroller Roller class which gets better every class. Today they walked out sore and tired which is a great success face to me! I talked with them after class and we are going to take one “Stroller Roller” class during the month and make it a walking only day. This will help switch it up too so they don’t get bored. After this class, I had to meet with Nancy then the P.R. David to make final arrangements on the July Fitness schedule. Since I’m teaching 2 different classes, I had to have a description for the schedule of them as well. Therefore, most of the day was spent writing up a drafted schedule making sure everyone that taught class had written their description, and then explain it to David because he had to have my approval before making the schedule out. After I got done working with the schedule, I was able to go to the fitness center and help at the front desk because there is always something to clean, fold, organize, as well as signing people in and kicking non-military personnel out. I really enjoy the atmosphere I must say.

Today I didn’t have to come in until 12:30 until 9pm so it was nice to sleep in for a change. Today is more of my relaxed days because of all of the work out prescriptions I have to make for the classes I’m going to be teaching. Then once I teach these classes I’ll be using this day to catch up on things I need to do regarding the classes I teach and meeting with Nancy. Today I had to go around collecting all the rules from each fitness facility and write them all in Microsoft Word so that if they ever needed to be changed, then they are already on file to change. After I had done this, I had another meeting with David, the P.R. guy, about ways to promote the fitness classes I’m doing besides having it on the schedule. We found a way to include the classes in an event pamphlet that military housing hands out to each house on base. After doing this, I took time to plan out my workout plans for my classes which took most of the remainder of my work period. I looked up fitness and health facts to share to the classes along with different workouts that can be done for my classes. I was more than happy when I was off work because it gets exhausting doing research for a long period of time.

Today’s work hours were different than a regular day because of the 4th of July event called “Freedom Fest” that happens on base a few days before the 4th. I came in at 10am meeting the with Liberty girls, who are the outdoors recreation and games coordinators for the Nuclear Power students on their base, and we talked about how I can help with the event that was going on that night. I was explained what was going to happen, along with the safety and other rules. Freedom Fest is an event full of activities and vendors for everyone on base along with their families. I met with David and he showed me the process of marketing and what has to be done to market this event. I liked this because I hadn’t experienced this part of the jobs along with the others I’ve been learning about. After hanging out with him most of the morning, at 3:30pm I had to go to the park area on base where the event was being held to help set up. It started to storm and rain at first but luckily it went away. I did realize that no “plan B” was planned incase of a storm so it’s a good thing it didn’t stay. The event started rolling at 5:30pm and I was in charge of the Potato Sack race, which went better than I thought. Once that event slowed down, my job from there on out was to help out with the other events such as rock climbing, paint balling, the inflatable’s, etc. It was a great experience to be able to help out each event station because I was able to get a taste of the different settings. I didn’t stay past my work time but I heard that it all went as planned. I just thought a Plan B should have been considered before letting this event take place.

Started the work day of at 7am until 3:30pm, this was a LONG day for me because neither of my bosses worked today so I was on my own. Usually I am use to them giving me a set of tasks and discussing my plans so instead today I used today as a day to get back in roll with things and my classes I’ll be starting up tomorrow. There wasn’t INDOC this morning because of people still being out from the holiday so I started out helping with the Fitness Center and learning more about the front desk duties. I shadow Riley, the Physical Trainer, a lot because I’m really interested in the field he is in and what he does. We went to the housing officer around noon and he was able to introduce me to the lady that deals with all the housing and getting the word out of any fitness classes to a lot of the dependents and in service military personnel. I was able to tell her about the classes I’m starting up and she was very helpful at contacting a lot of the military personnel’s in housing so I can start growing my classes. After this, I used the rest of the day to meet some of the other class fitness instructors that had come in to get the new schedules and got their perspective on instructing along with advice. I also was able to go over my plans for my fitness classes with Riley to get a 2nd opinion on what not and what to do for the class. Today was more successful than I thought it would be because of my bosses being out but I’m starting to learn things and do things on my own so it was a great experience to do things on my time, on my own, for today.

Week 7 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling Week 7

Week 7 of the internship with Cycling involved stepping outside of the office more. There was an athlete, Vance from Iowa, that visited so it was my duty to take him on a tour and show him the cycling facilities and then Coach and I chatted with him and his mother about college, racing, and things in general. You could tell he was nervous because he was very quiet, but his mother kept talking, it was actually quite funny how it seems to be that the parents are more interested than the students.

Later in the week, Coach and I spent time out at one of our facilities, the bmx and mountain bike track. It was hard work out there because the weeds have grown a lot and there was much to be done, and there still is much to do. Coach drove the gator with a drag, while I took an industrial weed-whacker and went to town cutting down the miniature jungle. It was a fun time because it was a different change of pace from the office.

Also, I contacted the porta-john company for our mountain bike race in September. I had to contact them via the phone and they have reserved it for our race for both of our race venues. I also had to call and ask for prices for a rental for a skid-steer bobcat to assist with fixing up our tracks. Fun times.

HWC Week 7

During week 7 of my internship at the wellness center, I came across new challenges. This past week was the half way point for the program. I'm not going to lie, I was slightly upset because only a total of 14 pounds were lost, but still at least it was a loss. There were many people who had gained weight and it boggled my mind. Thursday involved a nutrition seminar, put on by a registered dietitian, followed by a workout.

I presented the group with a challenge on Tuesday evening after the weigh-in. I wanted to challenge the group and see who could hold a wall-squat the longest. It came down to two participants, however, one of them kept moving around so I decided to do a tie-breaker involving a leg-lifts. One of the participants was trying to cheat and kept arguing with me, so I had to make the call to disqualify him. The person who won the challenge was given the privilege of leading half of the group in a workout, and the person who lost the largest percentage of weight was put in charge of the other half of the group.

The couch-2-5K group met on Saturday and it was a great workout with about eight people. The weather was gorgeous and the people earned their sweat. New surprises are in store for the coming week. :)

Week 5 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

6-21-11
Made a recycle run with Brady today. Are awesome sponsor RECHARGE electrolyte sports drink is most responsible for this, and I am most thankful for it. I got on top of the roof for a little annual maintenance. Cleaned gutters by hand and took the blower to make the roof look cleaned off and flush all of the fine dust and leaves i missed out by hand. Side walks needed blown off too. The front herbal garden needed watered and i pulled some weeds that made the front of the building look very unattractive. The client is so judgmental, the best possible first impression is what will land you the tip at the end of the trip along with hard work. MSR high altitude stoves gutted and gone over to ensure cleanliness and functionality. Bought insect spray today for spider control when i come back to work after my days off

6-24-11
New Adventure Medical Kits (AMK) arrived in mail, printed off injury form to put inside and put in medical list. Also a new BD Storm tent arrived in the mail today. Cut new guidelines, labeled body, fly and stuff sack. Put guidelines on tent with special knots. Cleaned house, vacuumed entire house, trash, bathroom cleaned, dishes, recycle in back trash bin. Put names and email addresses in constant contact for Tim to send out information on future SWS seminars. Prepped gear and filled all empty MSR fuel bottles. Copied list of upcoming event on calender with trip name, lead guides, assistant guides to send to Tim and Dave to confirm. Washed 2 Shasta short ropes to make clean and to make them last longer, also checked for any torn areas in the sheath.

6-25-11
Car decal removal from Dave's company car. Decals are on the way. Water front plants and pull a few weeds really fast. Clean up guide house.

6-27-11
Decals arrived, clean glass really good and put on back windows of Dave's car. Turned out great and this was a fun project for me. More constant contact information to be inserted on the computer for clients. Prepped the JH Ranch trip with ice axe's, helmets, and beaners for youth and camera men. Met with JH Ranch crew with Dave to go over kids packs and equipment to tell them yea, or nea on what to bring on the trip. Made sure all medical paperwork was completed and signed correctly with minors parents signatures as well. Washed 4 ropes, hang dry, and coil and hang up to organize in the back room.

Week 4 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

6-16-11
Booking reservations of clients, names, dates, routes, billing info into the company computer under a program called Book'em 5. Go through Adventure Medical Fundamental kits to make sure nothing is missing or running low. If low or missing add to medical kit. Went online to print the list of items in the kits that come standard from the factory and laminated this sheet as a future reference to easily recognize missing items.

6-17-11
Had a great ice axe clinic today. My skills are improving and i am becoming a better hands on teacher of the material in this seminar class. Clean house and organize back room from crampons, harnesses, and helmets from today's clinic.

6-18-11
I experienced frustration today at the very beginning of the ice axe clinic. People showed up late i had to deal with it. I had a miss communication between Tim as we were one ice axe, and crampon short, so i had to give up my personal stuff for the client. I didn't like this, made me look bad, but in the end all of the clients went from knowing nothing about mountaineering to knowing some of the most use full techniques that will assist them on there next SWS adventure or personal adventure on the mountain. Talked with Tim more about the special project. Crunched a few numbers, ideas, and layout. Cant wait.

6-19-11
There are 3 North Face Trango 3.1 tents that are all in non working condition with different causes from ruptured fly's, tent bodies, and split zippers. My goal for the day is to get one working tent out of these three by using the best body, fly, and poles while if needed patching and repairing with seem grip or whatever necessary for the upcoming JH trip. I am hanging around waiting for some returning trips to help put away and keep the back room organized. I called Fed Ex for a pick up for tomorrow to send back some BD tents under warranty.

6-20-11
Today was errand day, Pages downtown, and went to the city council of Mt. Shasta to drop off paperwork for Dave. All of the fuel bottles need to be refilled from trips over the weekend. I prepped some trips for Whitney. Whitney trips are harder to prep as I have to send more harnesses, ice axe and crampons than necessary to fit the undermined client size. Laminated guide wilderness passes, and summit passes for Shasta.

Week 3 Matt Dooley SWS Mountain Guides

6-7-11
Today I was able to do some desperately needed painting on the front SWS company sign to make it pop with life again. I am able to finally paint with good predictable weather. While i am in the painting mood i also stained the picnic table out front. The table desperately needed some finishing. Almost every client that comes to SWS office sees this sign, and either sits at the table to fill out paperwork for trips or uses this table for gear check for there pre trip. Once done with the painting it is time to clean up the guide house.

6-10-11
My personal Millet pack arrives! Last week I sent out 4 tents to Black Diamond (BD) to be covered under warranty. Tents were up on Shasta and were shredded due to harsh winds. Today the replacement for Squall C, Storm Track A,D,E have arrived. I label tents on body and fly with sharpie. Make all the new tents new guide lines, tie special knots in guide lines, and bundle them up to be used on the mountain. New BD helmets arrived as well. Once again label helmets with sharpie, red tape, and SWS logo stickers. Crit Conrad was last years intern, and is currently a new assistant/lead guide this year on trips. Crit knows all of the company gear very well and showed me how to disassemble the MSR Whisper lite International stoves and fuel pumps. Went through seals, lubricants and replacing parts and what is most commonly wrong with the stoves in the field. This is important work, without proper working stoves and pumps guides will spend more time in the field away from clients, snow melting for water is dramatically drawn out and uses more fuel with a less than perfect performing stove, and most importantly cooking food is slowed way down.

6-11-11
Today I was able to get on the mountain with an ice axe clinic with my mentor Dave Cressman. Clients arrive and I promptly in the morning. I am now starting to get the hang of weekend mornings around the office. Paperwork must be filled out and I have to make sure all the information is filled out for safety. I have to fit crampons, and Ice Axes to all clients while doing the paperwork. It gets crazy in the morning. I sharpen up my skills with self ballet and self arrest in the ice axe/crampon clinic to eventually be able to go out on a summit trip.

6-12-11
Today several trips came back off the mountain. I am in the office with cold drinks for clients and able to help lead guides with unpacking and organizing to put gear in the back room. Clean building and do chores.

6-13-11
Today i cleaned JB's stoves as he was having some build up and gunk in the lines. More cleaning around the guide house.
