Week 9 - William Gates - Cycling/HWC

Cycling Week 9

Week 9 of my Cycling internship included helping schedule two campus tours for potential athletes. I also had to travel to Jeffrey's shop next to Five Star to purchase some bug bombs to help kill some of the remaining spiders and bugs in the cycling shed next to the Career Services Center. I learned how to charge something to the Lindsey Wilson College account at Jeffrey's which was cool to learn to do that. I also spent time at the mountain bike property near Summit Manor spraying weed killer on some of the really grown weeds. It was extremely hot outside and Coach and I had to fill up the tank with water and weed killer three times to cover the dual slalom track.

Coach and I also did the voice over portion of the video project for the road race course. It was really fun doing that with Travis and Coach. Some of the bloopers are going to be hilarious. We had 25 (or so) minutes of video and we wanted to get it to 10 minutes or less. On some of the parts that there is not narration Travis had to speed it up to 2000%. It seems like it would be too fast, but it was actually a great speed and you could still see everything clearly.

Saturday included leading a tour for a potential athlete from near Nashville, Tennessee. It was great to give a tour to a potential athlete, again, but the bad part about a tour on a Saturday in summer is that most of the facilities are locked. We typically show Slider, the Athletic Trainer's room, some dorm rooms, but they were locked. We managed to still give a good tour and we answered as many questions as we could.

HWC Week 9

Week 9 of the Wellness Center internship included reaching out to Wal-Mart and Cafe on the Square, as they have offered to donate gifts to the challenge which ends on the 26th of July. The group also lost about 25 pounds at the weigh-in, so that puts the total weight lost at about 330 pounds. I told the group that there would not be a week 7 weigh in (July 19, 2011) because I wanted them to see how they did on their own. In a way it makes me nervous because some of them will continue on towards the final weigh-in, but some will not and I will continually hear excuses about this and that. That is just part of the job, though.

I finalized the 5K course last week and it is actually quite challenging because of the rolling hills here, but it is doable, for sure. There were only five people that came to the Couch-2-5K training on Saturday morning. It was a cool Saturday morning, which was only one week before the actual 5K event on July 23, 2011. Since it was a small group, we ended up running the 5K course since they asked nicely. They had a great time and it was nice to hear feedback from people. One more full week of internships, followed by two days after week 10 is complete. Looking forward to the small break!
